GRENADA IN WARTIME

In welcoming the guests, Dr. Curtis Jacobs, Head of the UWI Open Campus Grenada told the audience that the publication of a book is a special time in the life of an author and encouraged Dr. Steele to enjoy the moment.  He also extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Steele on her accomplishment.

Professor Hazel Simmons-Mc Donald, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Open Campus, Professor Sir Woodville Marshall, Professor Emeritus UWI, Sir Alister Mc Intyre, former Vice Chancellor of UWI and the book’s publishers Paria Publishing Co. Ltd., conveyed praises to Dr. Steele on capturing an important piece of Grenada’s history.

‘Grenada in Wartime’ gives the reader a glimpse into what life in wartime was like for Grenadians, and documents the worst experience for Grenada during the war – the disappearance of the auxiliary schooner, Island Queen, with 67 passengers and crew during a voyage between Grenada and St. Vincent in August 1944, when the war in the Caribbean was virtually over.

In reviewing the book, Mrs. Gillian Glean-Walker, Head of the UWI Open Campus Jamaica - Eastern Region, and a Grenadian, told the audience that ‘Grenada in Wartime’ is a well-structured book with action and vibrancy from the beginning and with graphic detail, like an action movie, it keeps the readers’ interest.

Dr. Steele considers “Grenada in Wartime” a memorial to World War II and to the 67 people lost on the Island Queen.  She wrote “although no battles were fought on Grenada’s soil, Grenada saw perhaps more action than some of the rural parts of Great Britain….Therefore when the definitive history of World War II is written, let not the sacrifices of the far-flung colonies be forgotten.”

She encouraged the audience to read the book and to pass on the knowledge to the young so that Grenada’s history will be preserved.  ‘Grenada in Wartime’ is available from Presents, Art and Soul, Ramdhanny Travel, the UWI Open Campus Grenada and online from Amazon and Barns and Noble.
